“Hedgerows, Heresy and Hoodlum” is a chaotic narrative of exploring our living landscapes and the spirits attached to it. The, often faded, stories of our ancestors have a radical, wild quality that transcends trends; gaining a powerful ability to reflect and comment on modern society. Folklore also brings our landscapes alive, encouraging a connection that brings empathy for how we interact with it. This tapestry is based on a poem written in 1888. The original viewpoint is a fearful one, thankful that the magic has now been tamed by victorian ideals of taming and reason. Yet, is it a good thing to lock the folk away? Join a travelling spirit through the panels and rewild your own perspective.
The illustrations were created with a combination of pencil and ink studies and digital colouring and finishings. The physical version is disperse dye and screen printed. Mounted on found fabric.

This work was made thanks to the amazing arts community of Leeds This work was originally produced to be displayed at SunnyBank Mills for their "Ones to Watch" 2025. It's been an honour to have my work displayed in the historic site that now forms a backbone to the local arts community. Leeds Arts University allows alumni to return for residences, giving access to studio spaces, facilities and contact time. I wouldn't have been able to create such a beast without this so thank you!
